Bond 20-lb bond is equivalent to 50-lb offset 24-lb bond is equivalent to 60-lb offset 28-lb bond is equivalent to 70-lb offset
Why different numbers for the same weight? The number refers to the weight of a ream of the paper, before it is cut. A ream of bond paper is 17 x 22 in. which might weigh 20 or 24 or 28 lb depending on the thickness of the paper. When the 17 x 22 in. ream is cut to 8-1/2 x 11, 4 reams of 8-1/2 x 11 cut size result, and if it’s 20 lb, the 8-1/2 x 11 ream will weight 5 lb.
A ream of offset is 23 x 35 in. which will usually be 60 or 70-lb, but may be heavier or lighter. The uncut reams are referred to as mill size or folio size or parent size.
Paper Thickness With a given weight of paper, a sheet could be thin and dense or thicker and fluffier. A 20-lb bond varies from about 0.0038 to 0.0045 in. thick. A 60-lb offset varies from about 0.0042 to 0.0049 in. thick. A 70-lb offset varies from about 0.0049 to 0.0056 in. thick. An 80-lb offset varies from about 0.0055 to 0.0058 in. thick.
Paper Finishes
Bond is usually smooth and offset is usually smooth or has a vellum (more porous) finish.
Texts and Cover have a huge variety of finishes:
Felt is quite rough, with a variety of textures.
Linen may be very subtle like Beckett Cambric or very noticeable like Royal Linen, or in-between like Howard Linen.
Laid originally had roughly parallel broken, raised, rough lines. Parallel water-mark lines ran at right angles to the rough lines. Most laids today, however, have a smooth “imaging” finish for laser and other printers. The laid look is simulated with a water mark that looks like the raised lines in the original laid.
Groove has parallel lines (grooves) as you would expect.
Pebbly Beckett Enhance has a subtle “pebbly” finish.
Paper Colors The greatest color selection will be in the most common weights: 20-lb bon, 60-lb offset, 65-lb cover, 67-lb vellum bristol, 70-lb text, or 110-lb index.
