Onion Skin Onion skin is a very thin, light-weight paper which was used for making multiple carbon copies. (Does anyone make carbon copies anymore?) It was also used for reducing the weight of a letter sent by air mail, very expensive at that time. (So much for history.)
Vellum Vellum can mean many things. It can be a transparent paper. Architectural and engineering drawings can be made on vellum. Light shining through the drawing will expose a photo-sensitive paper to become a blueprint.
Haviland Printing & Graphics has used vellum as a transparent sheet just inside the cover of a booklet to add elegance. Sometimes the vellum, just covering the title page. We have also printed a design on this vellum sheet.
In the last year, vellum has increasingly been used in wedding invitations. The invitation may be covered by a vellum sheet with or without a design printed on it or the invitation may be printed on a vellum sheet over a back card with a pattern, such as flowers. Attached with a ribbon and a bow, the vellum sheet adds elegance to the invitation.
Vellum can also refer to the finish of a paper
Bond Some people refer to bonded paper. Its really bond paper. (Its bourbon that bonded.) Bond can be a premium No. 1 letterhead paper (whiter and brighter) as well as copier paper (a No. 4 or No. 5 bond) Copier bonds, sometime called Xero bonds, have a controlled moisture percentage to minimize jamming in your copier. Typically bond is 20-lb or 24-lb.
Writing Writing is a letterhead paper. Usually it is textured and only available in 24-lb.
Offset Offset papers are uncoated with finishes designed for easy printing by the offset process. Offset papers readily absorb ink, avoiding set-off. The most common weights for offset are 60 and 70 lb. 60 lb (equivalent to 24 lb bond) is often used in booklets rather than 20 lb bond because it has less show-through, especially an opaque offset (which is more costly than regular offset).
Text Text is usually 70-lb or 80-lb and usually has a texture. 70-lb. text is the most common weight.
HEAVIER CARD OR COVER WEIGHTS
The more common heavier papers include vellum bristol, cover, index, and tag. Index may to 90-lb, 110-lb. or 140-lb. The size of an uncut ream is 22-1/2 x 35 in. Cover and vellum bristol come 23 x 35 in. and 26 x 40 in. folio size.
Vellum Bristol Vellum bristol is softer (the surface is more porous) and less expensive than cover, and is lighter weight. 57-lb and 67-lb are the most common weights. A 67-lb vellum bristol weighs about as much as a 55-lb cover. Because it is less expensive, we often use vellum bristol for postcards. But being softer, it will dog-ear quicker than cover. Heavier bristols, 80-lb or 100-lb is sometimes used for business cards.
Cover Uncoated cover stock is commonly 65-lb or 80-lb although lighter and heavier weights may be available. Cover is used for business cards and for the cover of booklets
